Let's Make a DIY Smartphone Art Frame for Cheap!
In this video, I take an old Galaxy S8 phone and I upcycle it into a cool piece of art. The phone is also too old to recycle, and there aren't many parts for it anymore, and worse yet, the battery is expanding and may explode someday. So I figure this is a great way to give it a new lease on life.
First, I take the phone apart carefully, using a heat gun to loosen the glue on the back. The battery has already done some of the work for me, though, since it's so swollen. I’ll take the battery to a battery recycler, of course, because those things are dangerous.
Once the phone is apart, I remove all the components I don't need, like the speakers and the vibration motor. I keep the good stuff, like the back of the phone, the screen, the motherboard, the camera, and even the tiny parts like the headphone jack and the SIM card tray.
Then, I arrange the components on a piece of cardboard and snap a picture. I import the picture into Illustrator and use it to create a design for the art frame. I cut out the design from vinyl using my trusty Cricut machine.
Finally, I glue the vinyl design to the cardboard and then glue the phone components on top. Hot glue works okay, but I recommend B5000 craft glue for better results.
I'm really happy with how the art frame turned out! It's a unique way to recycle an old phone, and it looks pretty cool too. I'm even releasing the design to my Patreon members so they can make their own art frames. And if you guys have any other phones you'd like to see me turn into art, leave a comment in the YouTube video.
I hope you enjoyed this video! I had a lot of fun making it, and I'm always looking for new ways to be creative with old tech.
